Getting Started: That Very First Step

Starting your virtual assistant business is “oh boy” hard work, but it’s also great fun.

Before you do anything, you need to sit a moment and think about WHY you want to be a virtual assistant.  By getting clear on WHY you want to start a virtual assistant business and then referring to this WHY when things get tough will help get back on track when you feel like giving up.

YES, you are going to feel like giving up at least once a week while you are building your business and marketing your services.

Getting started in your VA business

It’s not easy; I won’t lie. It takes an enormous about of hard work, dedication & commitment to build & grow your virtual assistant business. You will need to take action every single day.

When I started my VA business, I could not find real solid advice and information. All I could find was a lot of fluff and vague answers. After struggling for a year figuring things out along the way, best practices, do’s & don’ts, templates, and ways to do things I finally mastered the art of running a successful VA business.  This is what sparked me to write down everything I learned during the past two years, create training materials, resources and courses from it and share it with new & aspiring VA’s so that they have real hard solutions for their problems. I created a Facebook community where they can find answers for their questions and have a place where they can feel supported.

Ok, now it’s your turn. Why do you want to be a virtual assistant?  Why do you want to be a business owner?

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you want to have a flexible schedule? (Perhaps you are a stay at home mom with school runs & after school activities)
  • Do you want to supplement your household income?
  • Do you want to feel accomplished?
  • Do you want to meet new people and help them solve the problems in their business?
  • Do you want to be your boss?
  • Do you want to work hard for yourself instead of someone else?
  • Do you want to wear what you want when you want?

I’d love to hear your WHY! There’s nothing more satisfying than reading about what motivated others to start their VA business.  Do me a favor and share your WHY in the comments.

    My why:

As much as I loved working in retail, since my vestibular issues started after a bad bout of pneumonia, the store literally made me sick. I needed to work in a quieter and visually calmer environment. I started looking for alternatives and came across Virtual Assistant. It was the perfect solution! I can do it from home AND I can still do the things I love.

    My WHY

I want to have a flexible schedule so that I have time to be around for my stepson and my mother and to also provide a better lifestyle for myself and my partner. I want the potential to earn a lot more money and be able to determine my own salary, to the benefit of my family. At the same time I would like to deal with the stress of being the boss instead of the stress my bosses put on me. At the end of each day I would like to feel that I have accomplished something by helping specific people to grow thier business.

Nineteen years ago, I received a flyer about working from my home. At the time, my daughter was an infant, and I wanted to be home with her. I have been dreaming of it ever since. I just didn’t know where or how to accomplish this dream. I have tried many many different things, mostly direct sales, and most did not work.

I want to be a VA because I want to be able to bring an income while living at home with my son, so I can be there for him. I also want to be able to travel and work from anywhere in the world. I would like to be my own boss.

    My Why
I was retrenched in July 2017. Since then I have applied for various positions. Most people don’t get back to you and those who do are scammers want you to pay to do work for them once-off. I sat and thought long and hard about whether I really want to work for another unappreciative boss or BE the boss of myself. So I have been researching options and a friend recommended that I try being a Virtual Assistant. So this is where I’m at right now. Looking at the various options open to me as a VA.

I wake up in the morning wanting to do admin, that’s my passion. I love helping people with my skills and I enjoy challenging myself and to prove to myself; I can do this and figure it out. I have worked 9-5 for 20 years and want to change that to a flexible schedule.

My background and passion is admin and bookkeeping. I’ve re-located to a different province after a divorce and losing everything, including my job during the Knysna fires in 2017.
I’m ready to start rebuilding a new and independent life. I’ve always wanted to work for myself.

I got into being a VA as things did not work out at the company I was employed at till May 2018. As much as I miss the corporate world I am happy I chose this path albeit a tad late in life. Had I not procrastinated years ago I would be more established. I made enquiries a while ago 2013, and just dragged my heels. Dec 2018…decided to actually do something and today here I am. I’m glad to have finally “taken the leap and done it”. Us “mature” ladies are also overlooked for the corporate world and VA is the only way to go ???
